The opening round match-up between No. 1 seed Virginia and No. 16 seed Gardner Webb in the NCAA Tournament came down to tale of two halves. In the first half Gardner Webb lead by as much as 14 points and concluded the half up 36-30. Virginia's halftime adjustments quickly tied the ball game 38 all at the 16:16 minute mark and a 3-pointer from De'Andre Hunter at 11:26 opened the lead to double digits and never went lower than that. Hunter led all scorers with 23 points. Gardner Webb's top scorer was Jose Perez with 19 points. Virginia advanced to face No. 9 seed Oklahoma in the Round of 32.
